About the Library

The New Portland Community Library serves the three villages, known locally as the North, East, and West Villages. The library also delights in circulating materials to surrounding communities, out-of-state visitors, and seasonal campers.

In 1989, New Portland’s first public library opened in an old schoolhouse in the North Village. Over time, however, the building proved unsuitable, and thanks to many grants, a new library was built in the East Village at 899 River Road, near the Town Office and Fire Station. The doors to the library opened in April 2006.

The NPCL’s entire collection and services are freely available to everyone. Our little library in the woods includes books for children, teens, and adults, an extensive Maine Non-Fiction section, DVDs, magazines, puzzles, and games. 

Technology services include 24-hour public Wi-Fi access inside and outside, no password needed, patron-use computers, printing, photocopying, computer classes, and one-on-one technology support. The library offers cozy seating, a private meeting room for individual or group use, book clubs, craft events, and programming for adults and children, including our summer reading program. Throughout the year, the New Portland Community Library offers book sales, bake sales, plant sales, silent auctions, raffles, and craft fairs.
